Malaysia set to roll out second 5G wholesale network

Malaysia set to roll out second 5G wholesale network

The current state of Digital Nasional Berhad's (DNB) leadership does differ from its initial structure. As of today, January 15, 2024:

No Chairman: The position of Chairman has been vacant since April 2023, following the resignation of the previous chairman.

Two Board Members: Currently, DNB has only two remaining board members. This is significantly smaller than the planned size of the board, which was initially set at seven members.

This situation has raised concerns about potential governance issues and a lack of strong leadership at DNB. Some stakeholders argue that the absence of a full board and chairman could hinder the decision-making process and negatively impact the rollout of 5G infrastructure in Malaysia.

The government has acknowledged these concerns and has assured the public that they are actively searching for qualified candidates to fill the vacant positions. However, there is no official timeline for when new board members or a chairman will be appointed.

While it's true that DNB currently operates with a limited leadership team, it's important to note that the company is still functioning and the 5G rollout continues. However, the situation remains under scrutiny, and it will be interesting to see how the government addresses the leadership gap and what impact it will have on DNB's operations in the long run.

🚨🚨🚨As of January 2024, no other operator in the world has fully implemented a nationwide 5G single wholesale network (SWN) identical to Malaysia's model. However, several countries are exploring and developing similar models in different stages:

Countries actively pursuing SWNs:

🟦 South Korea: The Korean government is pushing for a SWN model involving a network operator called K-NET. The rollout faces some opposition from existing operators, and details are still being finalized.
🟦 United Kingdom: The UK government is exploring an SWN concept to address rural coverage issues. They are currently conducting trials and haven't finalized the structure.
🟦 Germany: Germany's 5G rollout involves elements of wholesale infrastructure sharing, although operators maintain more control compared to a pure SWN model.

Countries with existing models resembling SWNs:

🟦 Singapore: As mentioned earlier, Singapore's NGBN network shares some characteristics with SWNs, focusing on wholesale fiber broadband infrastructure, though not specifically for 5G.
🟦 United Arab Emirates: Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority offers wholesale access to its 5G network within its free zone area, but this doesn't extend to the entire country.
