Why there is so much hype of 5G REDCap?
Why there is so much hype of 5G REDCap?There are a few reasons:
⌛5G REDCap offers a number of advantages over traditional 5G devices.
⌛Reduced cost: 5G REDCap devices are typically less expensive than traditional 5G devices -have a simpler design & do not require as much power.
⌛Reduced power consumption: 5G REDCap devices consume less power than traditional 5G devices -can be used for longer periods of time on a single battery charge.
⌛ Extended range: 5G REDCap devices have a longer range than traditional 5G devices -can be used in more remote areas.
⌛Improved security: 5G REDCap devices have improved security features than traditional 5G devices - less vulnerable to cyberattacks.
As a result of these advantages, 5G REDCap devices are well-suited for a variety of use cases, such as:
⏰Wearables: 5G REDCap devices can be used to power wearable devices, such as smartwatches and fitness trackers.
⏰Industrial sensors: 5G REDCap devices can be used to power industrial sensors, such as those used in manufacturing and logistics.
⏰Video surveillance: 5G REDCap devices can be used to power video surveillance systems.
⏰Remote control: 5G REDCap devices can be used to control remote devices, such as drones and robots.
🎬 3GPP has come up with a solution in R17 with the introduction of reduced capability(RedCap) devices. RedCap devices will have less complexity and so low cost, these devices will help in expansion of the NR devices ecosystem much faster.
🎬With the reduced capabilities, device cost can be reduced to ~65%(FR1) and ~50%(FR2).
🎬 RedCap Use Cases
1. Wearables as smart watches, wearable medical devices, AR/VR goggles, etc(Data Rate DL- 5-50 Mbps, UL- 2-5 Mbps, releaxed latency & battery life of 1-2 weeks)
2. Industrial wireless sensors(Data Rate < 2Mbps, Latency <100ms, Reliability - 99.99%)
3. Video surveillance(Data Rate 2-25 Mbps, Latency <500ms, Reliability - 99.9%)
🎬 Definition of RedCap Device & support sent in UE-Capability
💡Maximum supported bandwidth for FR1 is 20MHz and 100 MHz for FR2. Bandwidths wider than these aren't supported by RedCap devices. Support for "supportOfRedCap-r17" is indicated in UE capability
💡The maximum mandatory supported DRB number is 8 if 16 DRB are supported then device sends "supportOf16DRB-RedCap-r17" in UE capability
💡The mandatory supported PDCP SN length is 12 bits while 18 bits(longSN-RedCap-r17 in UE capability) is optional
💡The mandatory supported RLC AM SN length is 12 bits while 18 bits(am-WithLongSN-RedCap-r17 in UE capability) is optional
💡1 DL MIMO layer if 1 Rx branch(for FR1) is supported, and 2 DL MIMO layers if 2 Rx branches(for FR2) are supported. More than 2 TX or RX branches or more than 2 DL or UL MIMOs are not supported by RedCap devices
💡Maximum 64QAM DL modulation order supported
💡Duplex operation - TDD or halfduplex FDD
💡CA, MR-DC, DAPS, CPAC & IAB are not supported by RedCap devices
