5G Network Sharing Guide

MOCN Explained: Sharing the Core of Mobile Networks

MOCN stands for Multi-Operator Core Network. It's a network architecture that allows multiple mobile network operators (MNOs) to share a common core network while maintaining their individual radio access networks (RANs). Think of it as a central hub where all the essential functionalities for managing subscribers, security, and data routing are pooled together, even though users connect through separate RANs.

Some key aspects of MOCN:

Shared Core: Multiple MNOs connect their user data to the same core network infrastructure, eliminating the need for each operator to maintain their own core network. This can lead to significant cost savings.

Independent RANs: Each MNO can operate its own RAN network with its own spectrum allocation. This allows for independent service differentiation and network control at the local level.

Increased Efficiency: Combining core resources leads to better utilization of network capacity and improved trunking efficiency, especially for data traffic.

Spectrum Sharing: In advanced MOCN models, operators can even share their allocated spectrum, further optimizing its usage and potentially boosting network coverage.

While MOCN deployments are still gaining traction, several notable examples showcase its growing adoption:

✅Public safety networks:
United States: FirstNet utilizes MOCN for critical public safety communications.
Finland: Erilisverkot, the nationwide public safety network, relies on MOCN for its core infrastructure.
South Korea: The country's public safety network features MOCN for enhanced resilience and security.
France: "Radio Network of the Future" project leverages MOCN for public safety communications.

✅Commercial mobile networks:
Denmark: Nokia partnered with Telenor and Telia to set up the world's most advanced shared wireless network with MOCN capabilities across 2G to 5G.
Malaysia: Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) conducted 5G MOCN trials with multiple telcos like Celcom, Maxis, Digi, and U Mobile, marking a world first for integrating five MNOs into a single MOCN network.
Other countries: MOCN deployments are ongoing or in pilot stages in several countries, including the Philippines, Spain, and Argentina.
